Shirley Furman, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) has been in private practice for 20 years. She offers an integrative approach of Cognitive Behavior, Mindfulness, and Hypnotherapy that focuses on sleep, physical activity, nutrition and mental health as a means to create balance with the ultimate goal of achieving mind, body and spiritual contentment.
Shirley specializes in treating sleep issues, anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, depression, grief, using hypnotherapy, counseling and/or medication as treatment options. She uses a Holistic approach with education and support on sleep, nutrition and physical activity and prefers to use as little medication as possible. In fact, studies have recently shown that the benzodiazepines and similar drugs for anxiety or sleep (Ambien, Halcion, Klonopin, Restoril, Valium, Xanax and others) can increase one’s risk of Alzheimer’s or Dementia by 60%! (British Medical Journal, Sept. 9th 2014). She enjoys helping clients conquer insomnia without having to depend on sleeping pills with her unique combination of the use of Hypnotherapy and CBTi (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia).
Hypnotherapy has been well-validated for its efficacy. It has been used to treat anxiety, depression, insomnia, grief, freedom from bad habits, smoking cessation, (with a money back guarantee!) and as a form of to enhance anesthesia for surgery and afterwards for pain and healing. It has been used to deal with gastro-intestinal problems including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Temporomandibular Joint disorders (TMJ) and teeth grinding at night. It can even enhance your sports performance. Hypnotherapy sessions usually leave the client feeling relaxed and refreshed. Sessions are recorded so that clients can use them as frequently as they wish.
